Follow the steps below to submit a quarterly update for self-employment. If you have more than one self-employment business, you are required by HMRC to submit separate quarterly updates for each business. It is best to have a separate VT Transaction+ data file for each business, unless you are VAT registered (for further details, see Multiple self-employment businesses).
UK Property
If you only have UK property, follow the instructions above, but select UK property where self-employment is referred to in the instructions.
Note: You are required to submit one quarterly update for your total UK property. Therefore, one VT Transaction+ file should contain income and expenses for all your UK properties, including any share from jointly-owned UK properties*.
Foreign property
If you only have foreign property, follow the instructions above, but select foreign property where self-employment is referred to in the instructions. In addition, you will need to enter a name and the country of the foreign property you are submitting for, by selecting Foreign property quarterly update > Manage properties > Add.
Note: You are required to submit one quarterly update for each foreign property. If you have multiple foreign properties, each foreign property should be recorded in separate VT Transaction+ files.
If any of the foreign properties are jointly-owned, it is easier to use VT Report rather than VT Transaction+ to submit a quarterly update for each jointly-owned foreign property. See Jointly-owned foreign property.
UK Property and self-employment
If you have both UK property and self-employment income sources, it is best to have separate VT Transaction+ data files for UK property and for self-employment, unless you use the same bank account for both, or you are VAT registered. See UK Property and self-employment.
UK Property and foreign property
If you have both UK property and foreign property, total UK property should be on one VT Transaction+ file, and each foreign property should be on separate VT Transaction+ files. See UK property and foreign property.
Foreign property and self-employment
If you have both foreign property and self-employment income sources, you need to have separate VT Transaction+ data files for each foreign property and for each self-employment business, and submit separate quarterly updates for each file. See Foreign property and self-employment.
If you have jointly-owned UK property as well as fully owned UK property, your share of income and expenses from jointly-owned UK property should be included in the figures for your total UK property quarterly update. See Jointly-owned UK property.
Jointly-owned foreign property
If any of your foreign properties are jointly-owned, it is best to use VT Report rather than VT Transaction+ to submit the quarterly updates for the jointly-owned foreign properties. See Jointly-owned foreign property.
